Lag Shot Golf Review (2023)

I’m going to start this Lag Shot golf review with a confession – I’m interested in checking out any training aid, course, or book that will help me improve my golf game.

Maybe you can relate?

That’s why I didn’t hesitate at the opportunity to test the Lag Shot. It reminded me of the Orange Whip swing trainer, except that you can also hit golf balls with it.

I’ve spent a few weeks using their wedge, 7-iron, and driver, and am now ready to share my Lag Shot review. The goal of this review is to help you decide if it’s a worthy investment for your golf game.

What is the Lag Shot Swing Trainer?

Lag Shot is a company that makes several golf swing training clubs. They have a wedge, 7-iron, and driver, as well as variants of these clubs for tall, women, and junior golfers.

What makes the Lag Shot clubs unique from standard golf clubs is the flexibility or whippiness of the shaft. Pick the club off the ground and it will bend under its own weight.

The clubs are a little heavier than standard clubs and each one has a midsize or jumbo grip, too. It’s all these attributes that make Lag Shot clubs tougher to hit. I’ll talk more about hitting the Lag Shot in a minute.

How Does the Lag Shot Help Your Swing?

On their website, Lag Shot promises purer golf shots, precision accuracy, and some added “young man” distance to your game. But how does this swing trainer help you achieve those things?

  • Tempo – Similar to the Orange Whip, the Lag Shot can throw you off balance a little if you get too quick with your transition to the downswing. It helps you develop a rhythmical – tick, tock, up, down – golf swing.
  • Plane – Also like the Orange Whip, you’ll feel it whenever you get too far off plane while swing the Lag Shot. This is good feedback, especially if you have tendency to come over the top in the downswing.
  • Swing Face – If you struggle to close the club face – which could also be a byproduct of a fast tempo or off-plane swing – the Lag Shot will let you know it. As such, you’ll have to start rotating your forearms a little so that you can close the face at impact.

The Lag Shot also helps you to develop or improve the lag in your golf swing (by eliminating casting or losing “your angles”). Lag is the intentional trailing of the golf club in the downswing – the 90-degree bend in your upper and lower arm.

Lag – or holding your wrist angles – helps you to create more clubhead speed and compress the golf ball better.

All this – club face control, tempo, lag, etc. – can translate to better, straight, and further ball flight. Basically all the claims Lag Shot makes on their website.

My Experience with the Lag Shot Golf Clubs

My experience hitting these clubs is no different than those in other Lag Shot golf club reviews – these clubs are tough to hit at first.

My first few swings with the Lag Shot 7-iron went to the right. Most were line drives and grounders. It took several more balls and slowing my tempo before I got my shots airborne.

Every time I got a little quick in my transition, the club humbled with me an atrocious shot.

I’m now at a point with the 7-iron where I’m hitting decent, somewhat compressed shots that can sometimes challenge the distance of my standard 9-iron to 7-iron clubs. If I can get my club face to close a little more at impact, or perhaps strengthen my grip, I’m confident I’ll be able to hit this club with some regularity.

The driver was a little easier for me to figure out. I chalk this up to my using the Orange Whip trainer. Since I already knew I needed to have a much slower tempo compared to my irons, it didn’t take too long before I was hitting relatively reasonable drives.

The Lag Shot wedge is a different story altogether. I’ve been unable to hit that club so far. All the shots I hit were worm burners or shots that literally bounced off the dividers used in the range stalls. I’ll need a little more time with that club before I figure it out.

Ultimately, you should expect to struggle a bit hitting these clubs at first. But that’s a good thing. The clubs are giving you the feedback you need to improve your swing and ball striking. That’s something the Orange Whip CAN NOT do.

Does the Lag Shot Work Swing Trainer Work?

We’re nearing the end of my Lag Shot review and one if not two questions remain – does the Lag Shot work and is it worth the money?

I can only speak from my experience, but I would say yes to both.

My tempo was already pretty good because it’s something I work on, as I strongly believe tempo is one of the most important attributes in the golf swing. But the Lag Shot has helped me dial it in even further.

Where I saw the BIGGEST improvement was in maintaining lag through the downswing. I’m hitting more compressed shots than before and am noticing a slight increase in yardage (even with range balls).

I didn’t collect before and after swing and yardage data so, unfortunately, I can’t say exactly how much improvement I saw in each area. But I’m confident that it’s worth the price considering that the 7-iron runs about the same price as a golf lesson. Or you can get all three clubs for the price of 1-3 lessons.

However, the Lag Shot golf clubs are only going to work if you put in the work and have the patience and perseverance to work through the ugly shots that will undoubtedly occur at first.

If that’s you, then I encourage you to check out the Lag Shot. I have no doubt that it will help your golf game.

Reasons to Check Out Lag Shot

Here are some of the biggest reasons why I believe you should buy the Lag Shot today.

  • Improve your tempo. Tempo is one of the most important aspects of the golf swing.
  • The finish. I like the black finish on the club heads. An added benefit is that you can see where on the club you’re striking, which is additional feedback you can use to improve.
  • The feedback doesn’t stop there, either. You also get feedback every time you swing the club or hit the ball between being in balance, shot distance, ball flight, etc. If you’re trying to decide between the Orange Whip and Lag Shot, this is one area where the Lag Shot wins hands down.
  • It’s great for warming up before a session on the range or before a round.
  • The Lag Shot can help you with your swing path. Like the Orange Whip, if you get off plane and maybe start to come over the top, you’ll get off balance.
  • It doesn’t force you into a particular swing, path, stance, or grip. It helps you create lag using your own unique swing.
  • The larger grips, while tougher to hold onto, is great for teaching you to relax your grip a little as tension in your arms can kill tempo and speed.
  • There is a 30 day warranty. If you buy the Lag Shot and don’t see any improvements within 30 days, you can return it and get your money back.

I can think of far more upsides to using the Lag Shot than not using it. Even the price is reasonable ($119 for the 7-iron and $300 for all three clubs) considering what you’d pay a pro to teach you the same things.

The Lag Shot has also received a stamp of approval from Andrew Rice and Adam Bazalgette, two teaching pros I don’t believe would lend their names to anything less than a quality swing training aid.

“I’m always looking for something I can hand my students that lets them “feel” the mechanical improvements we are trying to make in the golf swing.  From the takeaway, to the top of the backswing, to starting the downswing and through impact, I can’t think of a single training aid that does this better than Lag Shot. It improves your tempo, swing plane, lag, and impact position. A true “all in one” high performance training club.”

Andrew Rice | Golf Digest’s Top 50 Teachers in America and #1 in Georgia

“Having taught golf full time for over 30 years I’ve developed a sense of what works and what doesn’t in the ‘real world’ of helping everyday golfers.  LagShot is the ultimate training aid in this sense, because it does just that.  It delivers the proper feel to a golfer, so there is no need to bog down with conscious swing thoughts.  If you want more lag, great timing, and a smoothness to your swing, then you want to train with LagShot.”

Adam Bazalgette | 3-Time PGA Teacher of the Year, ScratchGolfAcademy.com

The bottom line – there is a lot to like about the Lag Shot. I’m going to continue to use the 7-iron and work on figuring out the wedge, as the little time I’ve already spent using these clubs has produced awesome results.

Will it produce great results for your golf game? There is only one way to find out. Check out the Lag Shot golf clubs today.
